Lab Draw Timing

For those requiring ‘fasting’ labs, fast (except for medication) at least 8 hours prior to your lab draw. For fasting lab draw members, it’s okay to have water or black coffee, however.

Please take all of your medications as recommended prior to testing.

As relevant, that means taking progesterone the night before the test and all other daily or twice daily medications the morning of the test with the blood draw then performed 6 hours later per the following guidance:

  • Progesterone
    • The night prior
  • Thyroid*
    • Exactly 6 hours
  • DHEA
    • 5 to 7 hours
  • (Oral) Estradiol
    • 5 to 7 hours
  • Testosterone Cream
    • 5 to 7 hours
  • (Oral) testosterone
    • 5 to 7 hours
  • Estradiol Patch
    • 4 days prior (before applying new patch)
  • Testosterone Injections
    • 4 days prior for twice weekly dosing
    • 5 days prior for once weekly dosing

*When testing thyroid, please refrain from taking biotin supplements for 3 days prior to your blood draw.

If your lab draw timing varies significantly from the above recommendations, please let your Clinician know those details when they review your labs.

Any questions, please reach out to your BHRT team.

Thank you.
