Nutrition Labels

Understanding how to read nutrition labels on packaged foods to accurately track your protein and carbohydrate intake is essential to success on the JumpstartMD program. Focus on these categories when you read nutrition labels:

  • Serving Size: Many packaged foods contain more than one serving, so make sure to track total servings and to stay within JumpstartMD portion guidelines.
  • Total Fat: Each JumpstartMD Fat box represents 7 to 10 grams of fat, although we don’t typically “count” fat as a box unless fat is the primary macronutrient of a given ingredient on the “Healthy Natural Fats” list.
  • Protein: Each JumpstartMD Protein box represents 7 to 10 grams of protein, so you can quickly determine how many boxes of protein are in a serving. For example, if the food contains 15 grams of protein, count it as two Protein boxes.
  • Carbohydrate: Carbohydrate is listed as Total Carbohydrate in grams. Each JumpstartMD Carbohydrate box represents 7 to 10 grams of carbohydrate. So, if the food contains 8 grams of carbohydrate, it counts as one Carbohydrate box.
  • Fiber: The fiber content is listed as Dietary Fiber in grams. However, it is not necessary to track your intake. At JumpstartMD we do not recommend tracking net carbs.
