A Balanced Approach to Weight Loss


At JumpstartMD, we know that one size does not fit all when it comes to weight loss. While many members choose a low carb approach to maximize fat burning, blood sugar control, and metabolic health, we understand that some prefer more dietary flexibility while still making progress.

That’s where the JumpstartMD Flex Plan comes in!

The Flex Plan allows for limited whole grains and starches while continuing to avoid added sugars, refined grains (like white flour), and liquid carbs (like juice and soda). This approach may slightly reduce some benefits of lower carb eating, but it provides greater variety while still supporting weight loss and overall health.

How the Flex Plan Works

  • Adds 2–4 additional carbohydrate boxes per day (as prescribed by your Jump startMD clinician).
  • Each whole grain or starch serving = 2 carb boxes (16–24g carbs).
  • You may use these boxes for whole grains, starches, or extra servings of nutrient-dense veggies.

Recommendations for Success

  • Flex Plan members can have 1–2 whole grain or starch servings daily (2–4 carb boxes).
  • Many members reserve these servings for dinner to stay lower-carb during the day while enjoying more flexibility in the evening.
  • Low-glycemic fruit remains limited to 2 carb boxes per day (after the third week on plan).
  • Continue to avoid refined flours, added sugars, and liquid carbs.

If you’re tracking macros, a general Flex Plan guideline is:

30% Carbs | 30% Protein | 40% Healthy Fats

Typical ranges:

  • Carbs: 20–35%
  • Protein: 25–40%
  • Fats: 35–50%

Success on the Flex Plan requires consistent portion control and tracking to stay in a calorie deficit while enjoying a bit more variety!
