Preventing and Treating Side Effects
The Importance of Water and Salt
A carbohydrate-restricted diet causes you to shed water and sodium at a higher rate than normal, which can lead to temporary side effects. These side effects are natural parts of the transitioning process and are not usually a cause for concern.
They Can Be Easily Prevented and Treated By
- Replenishing lost fluids by drinking at least 80 – 100 ounces of fluid daily, mostly water.
- Replacing lost sodium by adding 2 – 4 grams of salt (sodium chloride) to your daily diet. You can do this by salting your food liberally and drinking 1-2 cups of bone, miso, bouillon or other salty broth.
- Adding JumpstartMD electrolyte replacement to your water to supplement other lost electrolytes.
Note: If you are on diuretic medication (like Lasix or hydrochlorothiazide) or have a history of diabetes, congestive heart failure, fluid retention or kidney disease, discuss your history with your JumpstartMD clinician before limiting carbohydrate consumption to below 50 grams per day.
